Water testing is how ambiguous leaks get resolved, and it is done wrong most of the time. The wrong version tells you a leak exists, which you already knew. The right version tells you which component is responsible, which is the entire point.
Start at the lowest point of the suspect area and work upward, one isolated component at a time.
The logic is simple once stated. Water introduced high on a slope runs over everything below it. If you wet the whole area and a leak appears inside, you have learned nothing about which of the twelve things you just soaked is at fault. Starting low and advancing upward means that when water finally appears inside, the last thing you wet is the culprit — because everything below it has already been tested and passed.
Almost every failed water test is a failure of this one principle.
Two people, non-negotiable. One outside with a garden hose, one inside the attic or the room below with a flashlight. Phones on an open call, because shouting through a roof does not work and mistimed communication ruins the sequence.
Plain water at low volume — a normal garden flow, not a pressure nozzle. High pressure drives water into places ordinary rain never reaches, producing false positives and, on an asphalt roof, potentially damaging granules. You are simulating rain, not a fire hose.
Chalk or tape to mark tested zones, a notepad, and a timer.
1. Establish the interior observation point. The person inside positions where the leak has historically appeared, with a clear view of the deck underside and the framing above it. Note what is currently dry, so that any change is genuinely a change.
2. Start at the eave, below everything. Run water on the lowest few feet of the suspect slope for five to ten minutes. Wait. Then wait longer — water travelling through an assembly takes time, and calling a zone clear after ninety seconds is how components get wrongly exonerated.
3. Move up in defined stages. Advance a few feet at a time. After each stage, hold and observe for several minutes before moving on. Mark each tested zone so you know exactly where you have been.
4. Isolate individual components. When you reach a vent boot, a skylight, a chimney, or a wall junction, test it alone rather than as part of a general area. Wet only its base first, then only its sides, then only the upper junction. On a chimney this matters enormously, because the apron, the step flashing, the counter flashing, and the masonry itself are four separate suspects and they fail for different reasons.
5. Stop when it appears. The moment water shows inside, stop. Do not continue up the roof. Record exactly which zone was being wet, and for how long. That is your answer.
6. Confirm by repeating. Let everything dry thoroughly — a day at least — then test that single component again in isolation. If it reproduces, the diagnosis is confirmed rather than coincidental.
Rushing. A proper test on a complex roof takes an hour or more, most of it spent waiting. Impatience is the main reason tests fail.
Testing top-down. Intuitive, since that is how rain arrives, and it destroys the isolation that makes the exercise diagnostic.
Too much water. Flooding produces leaks that do not occur in real weather, sending you to repair something that was never the problem.
Not accounting for wind. If a leak only appears in storms, a vertical hose test may not reproduce it, because the actual mechanism is wind pressure driving water uphill under a course. Directing water upward at a shallow angle from below can sometimes simulate this, and a negative test result should not be treated as proof of nothing wrong when the reported symptom is storm-specific.
Testing a dry-season roof. Some leaks require the assembly to be already saturated before they express. A test in August on a roof that has been dry for six weeks can come back clean on a component that leaks reliably in February.
If the attic evidence shows condensation — even discolouration across a whole plane, beading on nail tips throughout, symptoms worse on cold clear nights — water testing will find nothing, because there is nothing to find. Confirm the diagnosis before spending an afternoon on the roof.
And if the roof is steep, wet, moss-covered, or structurally questionable, this is not a homeowner exercise. The test is only useful if someone can safely occupy both positions, and no diagnosis is worth a fall.
