Shingle wind ratings appear in every product brochure and are almost never explained. In Seattle they matter for a specific and geographically narrow reason: our citywide design wind speed is unremarkable, but a subset of addresses experience a wind environment that has almost nothing to do with the citywide figure.
Asphalt shingles carry wind ratings under two ASTM test standards, and they use different class letters, which is the main source of confusion.
ASTM D3161 is the older method, testing shingles on an inclined plane in a wind stream. Its classes are A, D, and F, where Class F corresponds to 110 mph.
ASTM D7158 is the newer method, designed to better represent real uplift behaviour on a roof. Its classes are D, G, and H, where Class D is 90 mph, Class G is 120 mph, and Class H is 150 mph.
Note the trap: Class D means something different in each standard. A shingle advertised as Class D under D3161 is not the same product as one rated Class D under D7158. When comparing, check which standard is being cited.
Design wind speed maps give a regional figure, and Seattle's is moderate. From that a homeowner reasonably concludes that upgraded wind ratings are an unnecessary upsell.
The variable that map does not capture is exposure. Building codes classify sites by how sheltered they are, and the difference between categories is substantial. A house in the middle of a dense neighbourhood, surrounded by mature trees and other buildings of similar height, sits in a fundamentally different wind environment from a house on an open bluff facing Puget Sound with a mile of open water upwind and nothing between.
Wind arriving over open water has not been slowed by surface roughness. It arrives faster, more consistently, and with less turbulent break-up. The same storm that a Wallingford roof experiences as gusty produces sustained loading on a roof at Alki.
Practically speaking: properties on or near the Sound-facing bluffs and shorelines. Alki and the West Seattle waterfront. Fauntleroy. Magnolia's western edge. Sunset Hill and the bluff above Golden Gardens. Discovery Park's surroundings. Any home with a long open fetch to the west or southwest, which is where our winter systems arrive from.
Also worth including: homes on ridgelines and hilltops anywhere in the city, since elevated exposed positions accelerate wind regardless of water proximity, and homes that have recently lost neighbouring mature trees, which changes exposure category in an afternoon.
For those properties, ASTM D7158 Class H is the correct specification. It is not a premium feature; it is matching the product to the site.
A crucial detail buried in the fine print: wind ratings are contingent on installation to the manufacturer's specification. That means the correct number of fasteners per shingle, placed in the correct zone, driven flush rather than over- or under-driven, and with the specified starter strip at eaves and rakes.
Under-driven nails leave the shingle loose. Over-driven nails cut through the mat and lose holding power. Nails placed above the designated zone miss the layer below entirely, so the shingle is held by one nail line instead of two. Any of these voids the rating regardless of what the box said.
Starter strip deserves specific mention because it is a common shortcut. Purpose-made starter has a factory-applied adhesive positioned to seal the first course's leading edge. Substituting cut-up regular shingles puts the adhesive in the wrong place, leaving the most wind-vulnerable course on the roof relying on nothing.
Worth being concrete about what wind damage looks like here, because it is not usually shingles in the yard. The common Puget Sound failure is broken sealant bonds: sustained wind flexes shingles repeatedly until the adhesive strip bonding each to the course below lets go. The shingle stays in place and looks completely normal. It is no longer sealed, so the next wind-driven rain drives water underneath.
Higher-rated shingles resist this because of stronger sealant and better lamination, not because they are heavier. And because the failure is invisible, the value of the upgrade is invisible too — right up until a slow leak appears in a ceiling eighteen months after a storm nobody connected it to.
