Is a Metal Roof Too Loud in Seattle?

It is the first question almost every Seattle homeowner asks about metal roofing, and it deserves a straight answer rather than the reflexive industry response that a modern metal roof is no louder than any other. That claim is mostly true and slightly misleading, and in a city where rain falls on roughly 150 days a year, the difference between mostly true and true is worth understanding before you commit to a fifty-year roof.

Where the loud reputation comes from

The stereotype is accurate for a specific assembly: corrugated panels fastened directly to open purlins over an unfinished space, with no decking, no underlayment, and no insulation. A barn, in other words. In that configuration the panel is a large thin membrane suspended in air, free to vibrate, with nothing to dampen it and no mass between it and your ears. It is genuinely loud.

Almost no residential metal roof is built that way.

What a residential assembly actually looks like

On a house, standing seam panels are installed over solid decking — plywood or OSB — with underlayment between. Beneath the deck is an attic or a ceiling assembly containing insulation. Each of those layers absorbs and dampens sound energy.

Independent testing has generally found that a metal roof over solid decking produces sound levels broadly comparable to asphalt shingles over the same deck, with differences small enough that most people would not identify which was which in a blind comparison.

The honest caveats

Three things the general claim leaves out.

The sound is different in character, not just level. Rain on asphalt produces a broad diffuse hiss. Rain on metal produces something with more definition — a higher-frequency component and more distinct individual impacts, particularly in heavy rain or hail. Two roofs measuring similarly on a meter can be perceived quite differently, and perception is what you live with.

Vaulted ceilings change everything. The dampening comes from the layers between panel and occupant. In a room with a cathedral ceiling, there is no attic air space, and the assembly may be thin. This is where metal roofs are noticeably louder, and Seattle has a lot of midcentury and modern homes with vaulted ceilings. If that describes your house, the standard reassurance does not apply to you without a closer look at the assembly.

Thermal movement makes sound too. Metal expands and contracts with temperature, and standing seam systems accommodate that with clips that let panels move. That movement can produce occasional ticking or popping as the roof warms in morning sun or cools at dusk. It is not loud, but it is a sound that was not there before, and it is a periodic mechanical noise rather than weather noise.

What reduces it

If you want metal and you are noise-sensitive, several things help meaningfully. Solid decking rather than battens is the baseline and should be non-negotiable. A synthetic underlayment with an acoustic layer, or a purpose-made sound-dampening membrane, adds real dampening for modest cost. Heavier gauge panels vibrate less than thin ones. And attic insulation contributes substantially — a well-insulated attic is already a good acoustic barrier, so improving it serves two purposes.

For vaulted assemblies, the conversation is more involved and should happen during design rather than after installation.

The part nobody mentions

A significant number of people who install metal roofs in rainy climates report that they like the sound. Rain on a roof is a widely enjoyed acoustic experience, and a metal roof gives it more presence. That is a matter of taste, not of decibels, and it is genuinely the reason some homeowners choose metal in the Pacific Northwest rather than an objection they overcame.

The practical suggestion: before deciding, find a house locally with a standing seam roof and stand inside it during rain. In Seattle that is not a difficult request to arrange, and fifteen minutes of direct experience settles a question that no amount of specification discussion will.

What the assembly costs, layer by layer

If noise is your concern, the useful question is what each dampening measure costs relative to the roof. Roughly, in order of value per dollar:

Solid decking rather than battens. Non-negotiable on a residence and included in any legitimate residential quote. If a bid proposes panels over open battens or purlins, that is a barn assembly and both the acoustics and the structure will disappoint.

Heavier gauge panel. Thinner panels vibrate more and dent more easily under falling limbs, which matters under Douglas fir. Stepping up a gauge costs relatively little as a proportion of a metal roof and improves both problems at once.

Acoustic or high-density underlayment. A purpose-made sound-dampening membrane between deck and panel adds meaningful mass and decoupling. It is one of the cheapest interventions available and the one most often left out of a standard quote, so ask for it by name.

Attic insulation depth. Already worth doing for heating cost and for condensation control. Sound dampening is a third benefit that comes free with work you should probably be doing anyway.

Two metal-specific behaviours worth knowing before you commit

Condensation on the underside

Metal is a superb conductor, which means the underside of the panel drops to outdoor temperature quickly and on clear nights radiates below it. Any moist air reaching that surface condenses readily — more readily than on a wood deck, which buffers moisture.

In a properly built assembly with solid decking, correct underlayment, and a ventilated or sealed attic below, this is a non-issue. In a poorly ventilated attic with air leaking up from the house, metal can express the problem faster and more visibly than shingles would. This is not an argument against metal — it is an argument for resolving attic air sealing and ventilation as part of the same project rather than afterwards.

Snow release

Seattle gets limited lowland snow, but when we do get it, a metal roof behaves differently from asphalt. Snow slides off metal in sheets rather than melting gradually in place, and it goes wherever the slope points it — frequently onto a walkway, a doorway, a deck, or a car.

The mitigation is snow retention devices installed above entries and over anything you do not want a slab of snow landing on. They are inexpensive when installed with the roof and awkward to retrofit, so the time to decide is during design. Homeowners in higher-elevation neighbourhoods east and north of the city should treat this as standard rather than optional.

The question behind the question

Most people asking about metal roof noise are really asking whether they will regret a large, essentially permanent decision. That is a reasonable thing to be nervous about, and the noise question is a proxy for it.

Two things help more than any specification detail. First, go and stand inside a house with a standing seam roof while it rains — in Seattle that is an easy request to arrange and fifteen minutes of direct experience settles what no amount of decibel discussion will. Second, be clear about your time horizon: metal's economics depend entirely on staying long enough to amortise the premium. At twenty-five years it is comfortably the better buy. At six years before a likely move, quality architectural asphalt with algae-resistant granules is the rational choice and there is no shame in it.
